FAQs for the Professional edition

Will my licence expire?
No. Although the certificate you create is "valid for 5 years" only, this just means that no more than 5 years should elapse between the time when you create the certificate and the time it is used to encrypt the book. Should your Adobe Reader disagree with this in 5 years time, go to its Preferences > Security > Advanced Preferences, and under "Verify Signatures Using" select "The time at which the signature was created".

How can I avoid having to type in my ID password every time I open the book?
Open the book with your preferred Adobe reading software. In the Document > Security Settings (or Advanced > Security Settings) you can specify that your ID password be stored in encrypted form together with other passwords. On a Mac, the relevant dialogue looks like this.

Can I transfer the book to another computer?
Yes, and you can use it on both computers simultaneously. However, you have to copy not only the book but also the ID file you generated on your first computer to the other computer, and then make the Adobe Reader installed there aware of it. See below for how to do that.

How can I make other Adobe PDF software (on the same or another computer) aware of my digital ID that is needed to read the book?
There are three steps:
  1. Find the ID file on the computer on which you generated the ID, Computer A say. If you made a note of its location in step (7) of the ID generation process, you know where it is. If not, the Adobe Reader on Computer A can tell you where the ID file is; see here.
  2. Copy the ID file (it has a .pfx extension in Windows and .p12 on a Mac) to your other computer, Computer B. (If only one computer is involved, omit this step and let B:=A.)
  3. On Computer B, go to the Security Settings of the Adobe Reader (or whichever Adobe software you'd like to use to read the book there) as described in steps of the ID generation process. Choose Add ID > A File > Browse to locate the ID file you just copied over from Computer A.
Can I read the book with other PDF readers than Adobe's?
No. The PDF sent to you is encrypted with Adobe software so as to be readable with Adobe PDF readers only.
